CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

A crude rectangular table had been set up at the edge of the small community. Planks of wood hammered carelessly into a few tall logs. Shaeleen looked up at Cole, who sat next to her and shook her head.

“Don’t worry about the woodwork, Shae,” Cole whispered. “We have bigger things to worry about. I have a feeling your special abilities may be tested during this conversation.”

Shaeleen nodded her head. Across the table from her sat Noelle, Raimund, and Archer. Noelle seemed to have a permanent scowl on her face, while Raimund was more relaxed. She wondered who was older and hoped they wouldn’t have a debacle in the succession of Althea like they had going on in Galena.

Archer turned to his nephew and niece. “First of all, do you know where your mother is?”

Raimund opened his mouth, but Noelle shook her head slightly and he closed it again. Well, now Shaeleen knew who was the oldest. Too bad. Raimund has the better temperament to be a good ruler.

Noelle glanced at Shaeleen and Cole before answering her uncle. “We don’t know.”

Lie! Shaeleen knew it as soon as the girl opened her mouth. Bending over in pain—the first she had felt in a while—she placed her fists in her gut and tried to sit up straight.

Both Cole and Archer gave hard looks at Noelle. Archer spoke. “I told you she is a TruthSeer, Princess. You might want to watch your words.”

“So you do know where your mother is?” Shaeleen asked the twins, glaring at Noelle.

“We suspect she is being held at an old family estate just off the castle grounds,” Raimund said.

Noelle frowned at him but didn’t stop him from talking.

“And I assume it is guarded well?” Shaeleen asked.

Noelle nodded. “King Cailu has some of his men there. He holds a tight rein on them, which isn’t all that bad.”

“Like the commander back on the road,” Cole said.

Noelle and Raimund nodded.

“What are your thoughts on this law outlawing magic?” Shaeleen asked, the power of the IntelligenceStone and TruthStone pushing her forward.

“I don’t care about magic.” Noelle waved a hand in the air.

It was the truth.

“My mother kept that old wizard and TruthSeer around for years. I didn’t see much good come of it,” Noelle continued, not afraid to share her thoughts. “The power of the HearingStone is a weak power compared to others. Althea has always been at a disadvantage compared to the powers in the other kingdoms, and we’ve gotten along just fine.”

“And Rai?” Shaeleen asked, not really sure why she shortened his name such. “Do you have thoughts different from your sister?”

Noelle’s face turned red at the use of Raimund’s name in so familiar of a fashion, and Cole sucked in his breath.

Raimund himself stumbled, trying to come up with a coherent answer.

“That’s what his mother calls him,” Archer explained, trying to hide a grin.

“I like it,” Shaeleen said with a smile. “So what do you think?”

“I don’t think what the commander and my mother’s husband is doing is right,” he said.
